These slow, sedentary sharks are native to tropical waters. We had the pleasure of swimming with a small, tame population in the Bahamas. Unlike some species who cannot stop and require a continuous flow of water through their gills for their oxygen supply, nurse sharks are able to rest on the sea floor and take in gulps of water through their mouths to breathe.
