Purple sea urchins are not native to Eastern Canada, but can be found off the coast of British Columbia. When populations are left unchecked, they are known to decimate kelp beds. However, we are now realizing that as messy eaters who eat by shredding the kelp into small bits, they are providing bottom-feeders with lots of nutritious snacks, be that kelp salad or urchin poop.
